Hands on Learning replaces Chalk and Talk

On January 29th, 2012, Times of India published a story on how hands-on learning is replacing chalk and talk and bland memorization inside the classroom. Our school was highlighted as a pioneer that is helping make this transition.

We at Ahlcon believe that if you want to learn about magnets, you have to build one. This concept goes well beyond science into subjects like English where writing and acting in a play is as much a part of the curriculum as the textbook.

"Teaching-learning process is now all about hands-on activities," says our principal, Mr. Ashok Pandey, who was interviewed for this article. As an added bonus, you will see a picture of some of our middle section and preprimary students in this piece by the Times of India.

Ahlconites in action as Paryavaran Mitra

In Ahlcon International School the students act like soldiers to save Mother Earth as they are sensitized about the importance of 3Rs i.e. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Students along with their teachers joined hands together and created an Eco club so that they can put about awareness in the society while undertaking the following projects:-

Culture and Heritage :-

Ø As a part of this project an international painting competition was conducted in the 3^rd week of March and sent to Thailand for evaluation.

Ø A Pledge Writing Competition on Earth Day was organized in the school on 6^th April 2011 and Ms. Swati Nuka, Project Officer-GEF-UNDP collected the best entries.

Ø Earth Day was celebrated in the school assembly and children were made aware of the importance of protecting Mother Earth through slide shows, pledges , poems and speech.

Ø Students were made aware about the festivals and their seasonal connection through bulletin boards and ppts.

Ø To conserve environment Diya and Candle making competitions were held at the school prior to Diwali. This competition motivated the children to ‘Say No TO Crackers’. A study of a post- Diwali survey made us realize how much the initiative influenced and involved the young minds.

As we all know that adoption of measures for protection of our Mother Earth is the need of the hour and Ahlcon International School is always eager to put forward their best. In this regard conducting the following activities was an important way of making the students aware about the dos and don’ts for the betterment of our environment:-

· Bio -Diversity and Greening:- In a form of activity designed as holiday homework the students were made aware about the importance of bio-diversity and the issues related to it. The students visited National Parks/ sanctuaries to observe flora and fauna and presented their observations through beautiful charts and write-ups.These were a major attraction of our Holiday Homework Exhibition and was appreciated by the parents.

· Energy:- An activity to contribute towards energy conservation. An awareness campaign led by Urja Rakshaks, pledge taking and a signature campaign actually sensitized students. The final audit conducted reviewed an amount of reduction in the electricity consumption.

· Water Sanitation:- A survey of River Yamuna. The activity was an apt in context to the time. To manage water resources and maintain a balance between humans and the ecosystem. Poems, Posters and Awareness campaign on water conservation envisaged the activity.

WORKSHOP OF TEACHERS IN COLOGNE, GERMANY

Three student's Neelesh-class IXth, Hashik- IXth, Siddhanth-Xth went to EYON (EUROPEAN YOUTH ONLINE NETWORK) along with Ms. Shalini Rastogi for international project during 13.11.11-18.11.11.They met 100 students, from 17 schools, coming from 9 European countries alongwith 30 teachers. All had come to Euraposchule cologne school to attend a workshop -in which students had to make an online magazine using Wordpress.

Eurapaschule the partner school of AIS in colonge-Germany was the Host of this International event. Students got an oppurtunity to meet student's, teachers from different countries of Europe like-Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Poland, Finland, Hungary. One of our student Neelesh had made a header for this online project with an italian student and during the presentation-100 student's nominated his header among best two selected headers which will publish in the magazine.

SCIENCE PROJECT IN TOP 20

The students of Ahlcon International School, Mayur Vihar Phase I, participated in 8^th CBSE National Level Science Exhibition held between 21^st October to 22^nd October 2011. The exhibition was inaugurated by the Honorable Minister, HRD, Mr. Kapil Sibal and CBSE chairman Mr.Vineet Joshi.The School’s project titled “Global Impact of the Introduction of Exotic Species on Natural Ecosystems” under the theme “Biodiversity and Sustenance” has been adjudged as one of the top 20 exhibits out of 180 projects that were showcased. This research based project was highly appreciated by the visitors, judges and teachers. The Students, Shraddha Mohanty and Ananya Shah received the National Level Merit Certificate and a cash prize. Also, the School will now get the status of Science Hub School as announced by the HRD Minister.The Principal congratulated and appreciated the creativity, research and professional competence of the mentors Ms. Navleen Chopra (PGT-Biology) and Mr. Ankit Gupta (PGT- Biotechnology) for the execution of the project and leading the team.

Amongst so many Model United Nation Conferences happening all around the year, all through out the country, Ahlcon International School, presents yet another, state-of-the-art MUN for all school level MUNers. With a very diligent Organizing Committee and Secretariat, I hope you enjoy your experience just as much as we had organizing it for you. It all started with the conception of the idea by the founder Secretary general of AhlconMUN, Harsh Punjabi. With complete support from the Chief Convener/ Chef De Cabinet , Ms. Gunjan Tripathi and the Deputy Secretary General, Vidushi Sabharwal, and this would not have been possible without the kind support and encouragement from our respected Principal, Mr. Ashok K. Pandey. The organizing committee has been formed. A training workshop will be conducted on 27^th and 28^th of September for the students and an Intra-school conference will be held soon after. The day 12^th August ’11 was a distinct one to be experienced by all present in the Auditorium of Ahlcon International School. An Interschool short Drama and Debate Competition in Sanskrit was organized. The Chief Guest was Dr. Mithilesh Chaturvedi (Head of Sanskrit Department), Delhi University. The judges for the day were dignitaries like Dr. Suryanarayan Nanda (Sanskrit lecturer), Dr. Pankaj kr. Mishra (Sanskrit lecturer), Dr. Omnath Bimali (Sanskrit Professor), Shri Ramnivas Singh Yadav (Sanskrit teacher), Ms. Promila Mehta (Headmistress). Ms. Sangita Malliwal, (Incharge Senior Section), Ms Anju Gupta (Incharge Middle Section) graced the Occasion with their presence..

The welcome speech by the Principal Mr. Ashok k. Pandey focused on the importance of the Sanskrit language and how we can emphasize on the inculcation of the language through simple but heart rendering words.

All winners were awarded trophies and certificates by the Chief Guest. In Drama Competition A.S.N senior secondary school won the First prize, the second Prize was won by Ahlcon Public and the third Prize was bagged by Army Public School, Noida and DLF Public School.

For the Debate competition the joint winners for the First position were S.R. D.A.V Dayanand Vihar and DLF Public School, Sahibabad. The Second position was bagged by Army Public Sdchool and the Third Position was achieved by Cambridge School, Noida.

The school Principal honoured the Chief Guests and other dignitaries with Mementos.

The programme ended with an exemplifying vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Anju Gupta (Incharge Middle Section) in which she expressed her deep gratitude and thanks for all the honourable guests as well as guest teachers and students.

INTER HOUSE ART AND CLAY COMPETITION

In the middle section, the Inter house art and clay competition has been held on July 13, 2011 in the zero period in the art and clay room. For the competition different themes were given to different classes. For class VI the theme was ‘Intazar’( wait) , for VII ‘ Khilonewala’( toy seller) and for VIII it was ‘Gapshap’ (interaction).

Students were very enthusiastic while drawing and colouring as well as when they were making sculptures. Two children from each section has been selected for the competition. Thirty six students were there for the art competition and thirty six were there for the clay competition. The result was very overwhelming. Best three students from each class was given the prize. Principal Mr Ashok Pandey and Section incharge Ms Anju Gupta encouraged, motivated and lauded the efforts of the students.

Extravaganza of creative minds through Holiday Homework Exhibition on 9th July 2011

Ahlconintes rejuvenated their creative spirits when the students of classes VI – X expressed their creativity through projects, models, charts, wall hangings and even live demonstrations which were given to them as Summer Holiday H.W. Children exemplified their talent so exquisitely that teachers were left dumbfounded judging their work. Even parents were overwhelmed at the exhibition. Presence of the Principal (Mr. Ashok K. Pandey), Senior School Incharge (Ms Sangeeta Maliwal) and Middle School Incharge (Ms. Anju Gupta) was encouraging and inspiring. The occasion drew enthusiastic response from all ends to make it a success.

Exchange Trip to Cologne

15 students of Ahlcon International School, Delhi along with two teachers visited Europaschule, Cologne from 24 May to 9 June 2011 in lieu of student exchange programme. Earlier the students and teachers of Europaschule had visited Ahlcon international in October 2010. The indian students stayed with families of their german partners and experienced the german culture.They attended regular classes with their german partners and experienced the school system in Germany.The accompanying teachers also got a chance to observe various classes and learn about the german school system.Various excursions like sight-seeing in Cologne, Cruise at river Rhine, visit to famous Bonn Museum were also a part of the exchange. A trip to the capital city-Berlin was also planned as a part of the same where the participants experienced boat-ride through the entire city and also got a chance to visit the Parliament of Germany and understand the political system of Germany.The trip was a great learning experience for the students and they all came back with a bag full of memories.Both the schools are now looking forward to the upcoming combined project under the theme “Women in politics in 20th century- Sonia Gandhi and Angela Merkel’’ which will be also be sponsored by BOSCH Foundation to a certain extent.

Report on THEATRE WORKSHOP

On 20.5.2011 Saahitya Kala Parishad organized a free Theatre Workshop during the Summer Break in Ahlcon International School.50 students of different schools took part in this Workshop. Motive of the workshop was to bring out the hidden talents and develop connectivity in them. Students learnt about the various aspects of the Theatre. In addition to this, in one month they learnt Theatrical Games, voice modulation, body movements, characterization etc. During this period, they worked on different topics and prepared a Play. The play was enacted in the school Auditorium. Approximately, 150 parents were present, who appreciated the work of the students and said such type of workshop should be organized in near future also. The Workshop was conducted by Mr. Bhupesh Sodhi and Mr. Arun Sode. In the end, the School Principal Mr. Ashok kr. Pandey appreciated the work of students, blessed them with Glorious future and gave away the certificates.

PARAYAVARAN MITRA - PROJECT BY MIDDLE SECTION

A project by Centre for Environment Education (CEE) in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Forests and Arcelor Mittal is being conducted for students of class VI to VIII in our school by the name ‘ Prayavaran Mitra’ . As part of this project few activities have been undertaken by the students in each theme .

1. Culture & Heritage :- Class VI students carried out an activity on Seasonal festivals & their connection with the season . They also studied about Traditional food Vs Junk Food. It was exhibited on the outside boards of class rooms.

2. Water :- Under the theme, a river journey ( Past, present and future of river Yamuna ) was conducted by students of class VIII. Students interviewed the locals near the river and created awareness among them. Poem writing and Poster making was also conducted.

3. Waste Management :- Class VII students worked on the theme ‘ Reduce, Reuse’ and prepared notebooks from unused pages of old notebooks covering them with beautiful chart papers. These were collected by members of “INTERACT CLUB’ which further donated them to “Saksham School ” at Noida which is a school for the underprivileged students.

The above mentioned activities were conducted in the month of April. Many more such activities are planned for the coming days.

We all are aware of Global Warming which is creating an unsolvable problem, an unstoppable climatic shift that will have devastating impacts in years to come. To help protect our Mother Earth we the students of Ahlcon International School have listed some points , with a request to please follow them and guide others also, so that we all contribute to protect our Mother Earth.
Some ways of conserving energy are-
 Light coloured walls reflect more light and hence minimum lamps are enough
 Choosing an energy star qualified clothes washer over a standard mode and other such electrical appliances can lower your utility bills i.e. save electricity.
 Save energy as energy saved is energy produced.
 Avoid frequent opening and closing of a room with air conditioner.
 Allow the food that is to be refrigerated to cool down at room temperature first before placing it in the fridge
 Use right quantity of water required for cooking that saves gas/ kerosene usage by 65%
 Use pressure cooker instead of open containers.
 Whenever possible open windows to let fresh air and light enter.
 Use Eco-friendly CFLs
 Save Fuel- Car pool whenever possible.
 Use public transport.
 Switch off engines at traffic signals.
 Don’t use tube lights when you can use sunlight.
 Use cloth bags and jute bags instead of plastic bags.
 Switch off the fans and lights when and where not required
 Arrest the leakage and wastage of water in taps.
 Use both sides of paper before disposing it
 Keep computer on hibernate or standby mode when not in use
 Whenever possible use fresh air instead of fans.

A Workshop on Connectivity and Motivation

2D Cel Animation Workshop

A workshop on 2D Cel animation was organized in Ahlcon International school by Mrs. Neeta, Mr. Madhav Mandava and Mr. Sachin for the children of middle section. Children learned the complete process of developing the story line to make a short animated film. Thirty students from class VI – VIII attended the workshop through 36 sessions of an hour each. Developing a storyline, creating characters and background, drawing storyboard, adding movements scan and edit the drawing and assembling frames were taught to them. The participants were awarded with a certificate along with the CD`s of the movie in a Special assembly.

EPGY - Workshop

A Workshop was organised by AMSAT-EPGY on 22nd January 2011 at Ahlcon International School. Dr. Murari conducted an enlightening session for the Teachers.

Adventure Trip for Teachers and Students

On 11th January, 2011the teachers of Ahlcon International went to Gurgaon for the Adventure trip. The teachers participated in various group activities like commando net climbing, river crossing etc. The day was full of joy and excitement.

On 17th January,2011 the students of Middle section went to Najafghar for the Eco Adventure trip where they got the chance to participate in various adventurous activities which taught them the importance of team work and better coordination.

On 26th october2010, Scotland delegates of Connecting Classroom Programme (CCP) visited the institution. Ms. Holly Bayton, Ms. Jennifer Thomson and Ms. Siobhan McColgan representing the Scotland cluster of CCP were greeted with warm welcome at the reception by the students in Indian attire. ORIENTATION PROGRAMME FOR CLASS XI

Ahlcon International School organized an orientation programme for students of class XI as well as their parents on 2nd July and 3rd July.
The program commenced with a welcome note by Principal, Mr A.K Pandey, highlighting the need for disciplines, focus and unrelenting quest for knowledge among students. His eloquent address featured the importance of acquiring a homogeneous personality which would help students to carve a niche for themselves in today’s world. He also elaborated on the inextricable link between the adoption of a sound education and a strong character.
Mrs Rama Srinivasan, Head Senior School gave a power point presentation covering all the salient features of the present syllabus and the examination pattern for class XI and the ways to cope with it.
Mrs Sangeeta Maliwal , Incharge Senior Section ,with the help of PPT discussed at length the academic challenges faced by the students of class XI and how to navigate these challenges as and when they come . She emphasized the need of nurturing talents as forecast task, motivating the students to participate in extra –curricular activities held by the school from time to time.
The concept of “synchro-studies’ was also introduced, when Mr Anand Sharma from “ I-win Classes”. updated the parents about importance of these classes and how they could enhance the competitive skill of the students.
The faculty members of all three streams (i.e. science, commerce and humanities) gave power point‘s related to their subjects before the students ,for better understanding of the syllabus . The different tools and techniques of evaluation for their respective subject were given special emphasis.
The parents were sensitized about their role in continuous improvement of their wards. The programme culminated with an informal interaction between parents and teachers over a warm up of tea.

Vidushi of class Xth was highly commended and Awarded By Ms. Simmi Kher (India Co-Ordinator) Face to Faith Programme

Tony Blair Foundation recently ran a competition looking for ideas to improve the
existing RESPECT principles poster. They asked all the registered students to offer them
designs that they could use to inspire professional graphic artists who will be
re-designing the poster to make it more eye-catching and exciting.
This was an opportunity to encourage the students to think about what the
guiding principles of the Face to Faith project mean - Respect, Education,
Safety, Perspective, Empathy, Celebration and Tolernace.
All entrants have received personal thanks, and an award for their homepage
on the Face to Faith online community. It was inspiring to see so many young
people put the time and effort in to prepare and send their ideas.Some of the winning entries . The judges were impressed by the standard of work, and selected a number of highly commended entries.

Neelesh Rastogi of class VII was the first student to win the Best Home Page Online Award

Face to Faith is an initiative of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, in conjunction with Global Nomads.
By means of video-conferencing and an online community, students of different faiths work together to investigate specific global issues; discuss a range of opinions, values and beliefs; and explore the reasons for similar and different views. Students can develop key 21st century skills such as collaboration, communication, critical thinking and problem-solving.
Shalini Rastogi is teacher coordinator and administrator of face to faith.28 students from classes VII-X of our school are registered members of rafi.ki/facetofaith/ . School page can be seen on this site along with students home pages, they chat in online conference room with other students from different countries, take part in online competitions involve in various projects based on faith,science,social science,art, maths , literature etc... 6 of our students have won excellent home page award from India and it is commendable. An Inter School Shloka Recitation Competition by IQF (Indus Quality Foundation) was recently hosted by Ahlcon International School, Delhi. The chief guest on the occasion was Mr. C.V. Gopinath (a senior Technocrat and at present working as Deputy Director General in Ministry of Communications) has been an ardent lover of Indian Culture and has also made three documentaries on it .Mr. Sanjay Singh and Mr. Himadri Choudhary (IQF officials) also graced the occasion.
As many as 13 schools participated from in and around Delhi. The judges were: Mr. Sudhisth Kumar Acharya, Ms. Anupama Sharma and Dr. Nirupama Sharma.
The Lighting of the lamp was followed by the Shanti Paath and beautifully choreographed Durga Stuti by Akshi Sangra of X-A.
The Principal, Mr. Ashok K Pandey, welcomed Mr. C.V. Gopinath and felt blessed by his gracious presence. Speaking on the occasion, he said that all the languages being taught in the school were given equal importance and the different activities organized in the school from time to time served as a platform for the overall development of the students.
In the competition ,there were two categories: - junior group(classes vi to viii),senior group(classes ix to xii).The chanting of the Shlokas by the participants reverberated in the auditorium and kindled a feeling of divinity amongst the audience. In both the categories, Khaitan Public School, Noida bagged the 1st prize.Bal Bharti Public School,Noida stood second and Army Public School,Noida stood third.Vishwa Bharti Public school,Noida got the second and Mother Teresa Public School,Preet Vihar stood third in the junior category.The chief guest gave away the certificates and trophies to the winners and congratulated them.He left a delible impact on all by his eloquent recitation of mantras and shlokas. Mr. C.V.Gopinath with examples established that all the knowledge of Science,Music etc.is already present in our Vedas.In his message, he reiterated that the students should know their Indian culture and its languages,especially, the Sanskrit language.
The program was a real success .The guests were presented mementos and a vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Mahua Mallick.The program was a platform to sensitize the students of their roots,culture and heritage.

Workshop for Middle School Teachers

A Math Workshop was held at AIS on 20th March 2010. The Workshop was conducted for “The Middle School Math and Science Teachers” by Ms. Arti Bhatia. The Workshop emphasized on the "Discover And Learn Method". It familiarized Teachers with simple Class Room Activities that will enable to facilitate better learning in students. During the workshop the teachers were made to work on engaging activities using various manipulatives such as Tangrams (for understanding of various Quadrilaterals and Application of various basic concepts such as Area, Fractions, Ratio etc ) Jodo straws (for identification of Prisms, Pyramids and Polyhedra) , Sierspinski Triangle (for generalizing a formula). Fractals correlated to the topics of syllabus of classes VI, VII and VIII. The topics covered were basically of Geometry and Algebra.
