NATIONAL AWARD 2012

Mr. Ashok K Pandey, Principal of Ahlcon International School, received “National Award to Teachers for the year 2012” at the hands of the Hon’ble President of India on 5^th September, 2013 at Vigyan Bhawan, Delhi. The award instituted in 1958 is given every year on Teachers’ Day to honor the teaching community. This year 336 teachers/ Principals from all over the country received the award.

BOOK WEEK - 2013

Ahlcon International School organizes Book Week every year and the library becomes the centre of special attraction. Students engage themselves in myriad endeavours like poetry illustration competition , Book craft competition , Cartoon Making workshop etc.

The school organized its fifth Book week from 22^nd to 24^th August 2013. Mr.Nimish Dubey, a renowned author alongwith the Principal Mr. Ashok Kumar Pandey inaugurated Book Week by lighting the lamp and also inaugurated Book Fair in the school. A beautiful Song with lyrics emphasizing on the importance of books was presented by the students. Mr. Dubey interacted with the students and focussed on the importance of books in one’s life. He also suggested some of the titles which children should read.

Students of Fine Arts attended a workshop on ‘Cartoon Making’ conducted by famous cartoonist Mr.Ajit Narayan. Students participated in various activities like Poetry illustration competition , Book Craft competition etc.

School celebrated its Book Week’s valedictory function on 23^rd August. It encompassed various activities related to books, reading habits and its beneficial impact through a plethora of activities like a play on library etiquettes, Book reviews, PPT on importance of Periodicals by Librarian Mrs.Kumud Kapoor etc.

The chief guest Ms Dianne Millar, Regional English Language Officer, American Centre distributed Prizes to voracious readers students and teachers. Mrs. Prem Dhingra, consultant library proposed a vote of thanks to all the departments for their contribution. Mrs. Sangita Maliwal, Incharge Sr. school and Mrs.Anju Gupta, Incharge middle school congratulated voracious readers among teachers and students.

BOOK REVIEW COMPETITION AT AIS

The people who read are the people who lead ,following this dictum and to develop the reading habits among the children, Ahlcon International School took a pioneer step on 17^th Aug,2013 and organized an inter-school Hindi as well as English Book Review competition in collaboration with the High Commission of Malta . Students from 15 schools of Delhi and NCR participated in it.

An enthralled creation of nine Maltese stories in a book ‘Maltese Folktales’ compiled by Ruben Zahra was given to the students for this competition. This was a step to create a bridge between the two countries and their vast cultures

The programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the esteemed dignitaries Ms Alberta Borg – Second Secretary ,High Commission of Malta; Ms Sapna Agrawal- Secretary , High Commission of Malta, the Principal Mr. Ashok Kumar Pandey and the In-charges . To invoke the blessings of Lord ,a prayer was rendered and a glimpse of Indian classical dance was also showcased by the young Ahlconites .

The judges Dr. Prabhjot S. Kulkarni , Principal Mahrishi Valmiki collage of education and Dr. Vivek Gautam, the renowned poet were spellbound by the praiseworthy expression of the participants’. Students from AIS also took part with much enthusiasm and brought laurels to their school with their sterling performance.

The Chief Guest as well as the school Principal stressed on importance of reading in life and emphasized on creating a conducive environment for the same.

NBA and WNBA legends visited AHLCON INTERNATIONAL

NBA Hall of the famer George Gervin and WNBA champion Katie Smith conducted basketball clinic at Ahlcon International on 1st march, 2011, courtesy US Embassy Sports Envoy program. The enthusiasm of the students impressed the legends. This once in lifetime experience prompted the students to promise that they will remember the tips on sideways movements, bending of left knee, light grip on the ball and its release and many other. The 6' 7" tall Gervin asserted that, "It was practice and practice alone that brings greater perfection."

Few Interesting Facts about Earth Day:

Earth Day was started by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson.
The first Earth Day was observed on April 22, 1970.
Although Earth Day was started by a senator, it was successful because it was a grassroots movement, not a political mandate.
April 22 was chosen as the date of the first Earth Day because it would not interfere with college students’ academic, social or religious obligations. It’s not during Spring Break or exam time, and it doesn’t conflict with any religious holidays. This was important because students were the main target of Senator Nelson’s “teach-in” campaign. Also, it was a Wednesday, the best part of the week to encourage a large turnout for the environmental rallies held across the country. "It worked out perfectly, because everybody was at work and they all left," Kathleen Rogers, President, Earth Day Network says
The awareness and excitement generated by the first Earth Day led to the development of the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Environmental Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act. It also inspired necessary changes to the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act.
The Earth Day Network is an international conglomeration that engages people in nearly 200 countries in community development and environmental activism activities.
Denis Hayes, a student in 1970, helped Senator Nelson organize the first Earth Day. Hayes founded the Earth Day Network, and continues to be its Chairperson. In 1970, he was enrolled at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, which he left after being selected by Senator Gaylord Nelson to organize the first Earth Day. Following the success of the first Earth Day, Hayes founded the Earth Day Network. Hayes continues to chair the board of the international Earth Day Network Denis Hayes has received the US national Jefferson Awards Medal for Outstanding Public Service as well as many other awards. Time Magazine named him as “Hero of the Planet” in 1999.
The first Earth Day (April 22, 1970) had participants and celebrants in two thousand colleges and universities, about ten thousand primary and secondary schools, and hundreds of communities. It is believed that some 20 million demonstrators participated.
Earth Day is now the world’s most widely observed secular holiday.
Many politicians linked to environmentally unfriendly industries were voted out of office in the 1970 midterm elections following the first Earth Day.
