Awareness program on Food and Nutrition by

US Department of Agriculture (American Embassy)

On Tuesday, 2nd September 2014, an Awareness Programme on Health and Nutrition was organised in Ahlcon International School in collaboration with US Department of Agriculture (American Embassy). It was a campaign to increase awareness of the benefits of a nutritious diet among students. This activity featured nutrition-themed activities, presentation by an expert nutritionist Ms. Geetu Amarnani. A key element of this activity was to convey that products such as fresh fruit, nuts, and dried fruit are an important part of a balanced diet. The chief guest of the day was Mr. Michael Pelletier Deputy Chief of Mission and Acting Charge of U.S Embassy. The other dignitaries included Mr. Allan P. Mustard, Minister-Counsellor for Agricultural Affairs, Mr. Jonn P. Slette Agricultural Attaché and Dr. Rohini Ahluwalia, Chairperson. The school Principal Mr. Ashok Kumar Pandey welcomed the dignitaries and emphasised the school’s efforts to create awareness about healthful eating habits. In all 500 students took part in the activities and some of the best performers were appreciated. DCM Michael Pelletier expressed his happiness over the enthusiasm and awareness shown by the students about nutrition and health.

NBA and WNBA legends visited AHLCON INTERNATIONAL

NBA Hall of the famer George Gervin and WNBA champion Katie Smith conducted basketball clinic at Ahlcon International on 1st march, 2011, courtesy US Embassy Sports Envoy program. The enthusiasm of the students impressed the legends. This once in lifetime experience prompted the students to promise that they will remember the tips on sideways movements, bending of left knee, light grip on the ball and its release and many other. The 6' 7" tall Gervin asserted that, "It was practice and practice alone that brings greater perfection."

Few Interesting Facts about Earth Day:

Earth Day was started by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson.
The first Earth Day was observed on April 22, 1970.
Although Earth Day was started by a senator, it was successful because it was a grassroots movement, not a political mandate.
April 22 was chosen as the date of the first Earth Day because it would not interfere with college students’ academic, social or religious obligations. It’s not during Spring Break or exam time, and it doesn’t conflict with any religious holidays. This was important because students were the main target of Senator Nelson’s “teach-in” campaign. Also, it was a Wednesday, the best part of the week to encourage a large turnout for the environmental rallies held across the country. "It worked out perfectly, because everybody was at work and they all left," Kathleen Rogers, President, Earth Day Network says
The awareness and excitement generated by the first Earth Day led to the development of the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Environmental Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act. It also inspired necessary changes to the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act.
The Earth Day Network is an international conglomeration that engages people in nearly 200 countries in community development and environmental activism activities.
Denis Hayes, a student in 1970, helped Senator Nelson organize the first Earth Day. Hayes founded the Earth Day Network, and continues to be its Chairperson. In 1970, he was enrolled at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, which he left after being selected by Senator Gaylord Nelson to organize the first Earth Day. Following the success of the first Earth Day, Hayes founded the Earth Day Network. Hayes continues to chair the board of the international Earth Day Network Denis Hayes has received the US national Jefferson Awards Medal for Outstanding Public Service as well as many other awards. Time Magazine named him as “Hero of the Planet” in 1999.
The first Earth Day (April 22, 1970) had participants and celebrants in two thousand colleges and universities, about ten thousand primary and secondary schools, and hundreds of communities. It is believed that some 20 million demonstrators participated.
Earth Day is now the world’s most widely observed secular holiday.
Many politicians linked to environmentally unfriendly industries were voted out of office in the 1970 midterm elections following the first Earth Day.
